Invitation to compete for the Aubrey Barker
annual Lecture Prize
Aubrey Barker was a distinguished land surveyor in Guyana. He was closely involved in the formation of the Commonwealth Association of Surveying & Land Economy in 1969, and was the president-elect. His untimely death occurred before he could take office, and this fund was set up by his colleagues in his memory to support the education and training of surveyors. Thus his influence lives on as also his name in Guyana – a 2.55 km road in Demerara-Mahaica is named after him.
The competition is open to undergraduates, graduates, and young professionals from developing countries involved in land surveying (geomatics), land economy, planning, architecture, construction, sustainability and related aspects.
Any theme may be chosen provided it falls within the disciplines of land surveying and land economy including valuation and quantity surveying.
The winning paper will need to be of a standard suitable for publication in relevant technical journals
The value of the prize is equivalent to £500.
Entrants must be under 32 years of age at the time of submission. Any paper submitted must be an original work that has not been previously published. It must be in English, using 12 pt typeface with clear margins of 25 mm (top and sides) and 30 mm (bottom) of each page. The length is to be not more than 4,000 words or more than 10 A4 pages inclusive of illustrations and diagrams. Papers may be submitted either in electronic format or as hard copy.
Personal data about the author must also be provided and certified by a head of a college or university department or by an employer, at the time of submission. Selection of the successful paper will be made by the Aubrey Barker Fund trustees, whose decision will be final.
